Papers: Watercolour
Watercolour paper is available in loose sheets, in gummed blocks, taped pads, spiral bound books and glued down to board, and the majority are archival. Sizing is particularly important, as it allows the colours to stay on the surface as the water sinks into the paper, allowing for the brilliance of colour to show.
Watercolour paper comes in three textures: A Rough surface allows for a pattern in the finished work. Interesting effects will form with the papers unpredictability; heavier pigments will sink into the tiny crevices of the surface creating unusual effects. It is also a popular paper when a dry brush effect is desired, as the uneven surface allows for little patches of paper to show through. The Cold Pressed, or "Not" surface is possibly the most popular watercolour surface as it lies somewhere in between Rough and Smooth. Hot Pressed, or "Smooth" feels more "slippery" and is better for fine detail.
Surfaces will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
