Pastels

pastels

The pastel medium was first mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci in 1495. During the 18th century the medium became fashionable for portrait painting, using pastel as a mixed-media technique with gouache. The 19th-century French painter Edgar Degas was a most prolific user of pastel and is considered its champion.

  • Spectrafix Pastel Spray$25.90-$33.95
SpectraFix is a casein-based pastel fixative that utilizes milk protein and grain alcohol to provide a non-toxic, fully archival fixative for pastel, charcoal, conte, watercolor, gouache and multi-media techniques. It holds and protects media without darkening or dulling colors. It can also be used under oil paintings to hold a preliminary charcoal or pencil sketching and provide a barrier between the oil paint and the drawing. It is all natural, odor-free and can be sprayed indoors while without obnoxious odors or unhealthy fumes. 12 oz. non-aerosol pump fine mist plastic spray bottle.

SpectraFix concentrate is available in a 2 oz. bottle, and is reconstituted with alcohol such as Everclear or vodka. Rubbing alcohol can also be used, but due to it's processing with strong sulfuric acid instead of simple distillation, it is less healthy to breathe and is therefore not recommended. The concentrate can also be used to increase the holding strength of the ready-made SpectraFix, and is also great for those who would like a formulation that contains more alcohol for evaporative reasons. The concentrate label has handy gradation lines to facilitate pouring 1/4 of the bottle into the empty spray bottle and topping off with alcohol, as an easy way of getting the standard-use ratios of concentrate to alcohol.
